Maintaining your air conditioner is imperative
to cutting your power bills and staying
comfortable during the summer.
The good news is that much of your air conditioner
maintenance can be done with minimal tools and skill required. Nevertheless, you must be sure
that you are sticking to a schedule to get it all done. Here are a few tips to get you started:
CHECK YOUR FILTERS
Checking your filters is probably the easiest thing you can do to protect the health of your air conditioner each year. Filters are inexpensive and can be replaced simply by pulling the old one out and putting a new one in. The whole process should take only a few minutes. However, you must be sure that you are checking all of your filters, including the one near your compressor. If you skip one filter, your system could be suffering.
KEEP THE OUTDOOR AC CLEAN
Another simple step to AC maintenance in Sandy, Utah is cleaning up leaves and other debris that builds up around your outdoor unit. Keeping this area clean and hosing off your outdoor unit will keep the cooling fins from getting blocked and will ensure proper airflow and heat transfer.
CHECK YOUR DRAIN LINES
Blocked drain lines can cause serious water damage if not addressed. If you look at your condenser unit, you should be able to identify a PVC pipe that runs from the drip pan out of your house to a safe area. When the unit is on, you should be able to see water draining from the line regularly. If not, your drain line could be clogged up. Using a bit of compressed air you can blow out the line quickly, or you can try to clean out the line using water, as long as you are careful not to overflow the drain pan.
OTHER MAINTENANCE
If you feel particularly handy, you can also perform additional maintenance by leveling your unit to keep the refrigerant flowing evenly, and straightening the cooling fins with a special comb. You may also want to inspect the fuse and the electrical wiring for any signs of damage. While none of these steps are difficult, they do require removing access panels and inspecting the inner workings of the system.
